Skin3zero
Lake Middle School on the Isle of Wight was our first school to pilot a whole day of activities focusing on the sun's effect on skin. 'Skintillating Skin' is part of the 'Skin3zero' programme developed for Wessex Cancer Trust. 30 students ranging from 9 to 14 years of age constructed a fantasy eating pyramid, made and tested solar ovens, debated on the pro's and con's of the sun, experimented with 'skin' pizza and made 3D models of the skin's layers from recycled materials.
Mrs Alison Adkin, from Lake Middle School, commented 'the pupils learned such a lot in one day' and yr 8 pupil commented 'I haven't enjoyed science so much since yr 5!'
Skintillating Skin
Wessex Cancer Trust recently took part in the annual Primary Science Fair organised by Education Business Partnership Solent Skill Quest.
The Trust workshop took 'Skintillatin Skin' as a theme, looking at skin as a waterproof cover used by everything from Rhino's to roofing material. Students were asked to visualise skin as a tremendous elastic hi-tech device crammed with sensors and the abiliy to grow with its owners. A huge benefit being that it comes free when you are born! Pizza dough was just one wow factor used to encourage thought provoking discussions.
One group was escorted by a teacher who had been treated for skin cancer. She joined in and stressed how important it is to know about how to look after your skin at an early age.
Organiser Robin Smith said 'Around 500 children attended the event over the two days at Marwell Zoological Park, and the feedback from them and the teachers has been excellent.'
