Research

Scientific advances offer the prospect of much better outcomes for patients in the future, but there is a huge need for research in order to realise these improvements. The Trust continues to play its part by funding pioneering research projects throughout hospitals in the Wessex region.

Two major projects that the Trust has funded are:

Wessex Cancer Trust Psychological Support Project, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

This 3 year project was funded in 2005 at nearly £400,000. Through the hard work and dedication of the team at Salisbury, Wessex Cancer Trust is absolutely delighted that the project will be sustained through NHS funding. Because of the unique nature of the project, the team at Salisbury has been invited to attend conferences and meetings around the world, not only raising the profile of Wessex Cancer Trust to a much wider audience, but enabling the expertise and knowledge about this programme, to be shared with others in a much wider field.

Proteomic Identification of Novel Cancer Biomarkers - Fingerprinting Cancer, Southampton University Hospital Trust.

Wessex Cancer Trust has funded the purchase of a machine for the Human Genetics and Cancer Sciences Divisions of the University of Southampton, which is in the forefront of research into proteomic analysis to identify novel cancer biomarkers - the fingerprinting of the early signs of the onset of cancer. The machine will enable screening for a wider range of cancers, providing earlier detection which could provide a better outcome for the patient. Dr Paul Townsend, who is leading the research, has made significant progress in the area of fingerprinting cancer.

At Wessex Cancer Trust, we are continue to seek funding to help continue this vital research work, which Dr Townsend believes will have a major impact in saving lives.
