Christmas Carol Concert 2008

Christmas is Coming!

On the evening of Wednesday 3rd December 2008 friends and family of Wessex Cancer Trust came together at Romsey Abbey to celebrate all things Christmas and we are delighted to announce that you helped to raise the fantastic sum of £3000 in the WCT style of 'credit crunch'!

The evening began with a lively introduction by Tim Daykin from BBC Radio Solent, who compered throughout the service. Following this the Abbey was filled with the soulful voices of the Central Hall Community Gospel Choir as they sung an alternative arrangement of 'Away in a Manger' from Ken Burton's Nativity Suite and the powerful 'We are One' by Ysaye M Barnwell.

The congregation then heard the incredible voice of 15 year old Miss India Rose as she filled the Abbey singing 'Memory' by Andrew Lloyd Webber and an upbeat version 'Winter Wonderland' by Felix Bernard, accompanied by the very talented Charlie James on guitar.

The three readings of the evening, two of which were written by Tina Hawke WCT PR & Media Manager, brought smiles and thoughts as stories of Christmas past and future rang true to everyone. The readings were given by Malcolm Le Bas, Chair of WCT Grants Committee, Sally Hall, WCT Chief Executive and Dr Adrian C Bateman BSc MD FRCPath a WCT Grant holder.

Throughout the evening the audince were also entertained by the musical sounds of the King Edward VI Concert Band, conducted by Martin Hall, where they played throughout the carols as well as giving their own perfomance of 'The Christmas Waltz' by Jule Styne and arranged by Eric Osterling.

Before the concert was over, the congregation was treated to  the awesome talent of Michael Warner, as he performed 'Cheek to Cheek' by Phil Woods as a solo piece on the saxophone. The Central Hall Communtiy Gospel Choir also sung 'Oh, Can you not hear?' to the tune of Waly Waly (English Trad.) and the words by Ben Parry.

After the evening was drawn to a close by the Reverend Tim Sledge, everyone was invited back to the Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School where freshly baked mince pies, which were kindly donated by Reeve the Baker of Romsey, and mulled wine awaited them. Christmas cards and decorations were also on sale as everyone sat back and began to look forward to the start of the Christmas season.

May we take this opportunity to thank you all for joining us and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
